I have been getting gout since I was in my early 30's, I'm 56 now. I first got it in my ankle very severe, I dont like going to the dr. much so I toughed it out. It took weeks to be able to hobble around and the pain lasted a couple months. I got it again about 2 years later in my other ankle. As I got older the frequency of the attacks increased but I hardly ever got it in my big toe, maybe once. It got to a point where I was getting an attack every other month– severe. I did have indomethacin after the first attack, sometimes it worked with one or two pills I was ok and sometimes it didnt do much of anything and I was in for a bad few weeks.? I started taking Allopurinol about 2 years ago.? I took 300mg for a while and then went down to 150mg now I take 75mg and I haven't seen it since. I eat and drink pretty much what I want with no problems.? My grandfather got gout very severely fairly often, He would get it in his ankle, knee, wrist and sometimes big toe. My father had high uric acid levels but never got gout. I believe it that it is hereditary.? Also I have been reading on the forum that people are taking allopurinol and cochocin while having an attack. I thought you should only take something like indomethacin while having an attack and stop taking (if you were taking) allopuninol and cochocin, I read where they can aggravate the attack??

?
I don't like going to the doctor much either.? My last doctor visit I presented her a graph of my uric acid and insisted on a year's prescriptions for colchicine, allopurinol 300mg. and a prescription for prednisone in case of emergency.? She gave me all the scripts.
?
I always have colchicine with me and take a pill at the first sign of gout pain.? I haven't taken a pill in a week, but in the past month there was a day when I took 4 x 0.5mg colchicine tablets, and a bunch more when I took one or two.
?
I haven't had an attack that made me need a cane since November, but I still get little flares, and colchicine stops them dead in their tracks.? I have never stopped taking allopurinol, but I adjust the dose over time based on my SUA.
?
Colchicine is great.? I have several year's supply stockpiled.
