Recently Diagnosed, question about current attck

Hello all,

I finally went to a PCP after years of going to an urgent care center for pain in my ankle and recently wrist and getting the diagnosis of “tendonitis” each time. My new PCP did a blood test and it came back an 11 mg/dl (I think was the unit of measure) and diagnosed with gout.

I went on colchicine for a few weeks while the attack subsided, and stopped it and went to allopurinol last week. Things went fine for a few days but now my wrist hurts again, not as bad as before, but still difficult to write, use a mouse, etc. I still have a few colchicine pills as well as a few capsules of indomethacin from a year ago. My question is can I take some colchicine along with indomethacin while I’m still taking the allopurinol, or do they have adverse interactions? What about allopurinol + colchicine + ibuprofen? I have a follow-up appointment on Monday, but I’d like to get rid of some of this current pain before then.

I’m also pretty miffed with this colchicine thing here in the USA. It works but it cost me $235 after insurance for 60 pills. Is there anywhere to get it for cheaper that is a legitimate source? I can’t really afford another $235 every month while I wait on the allopurinol to do its thing, but I also can’t afford to lose a lot of time from work due to not being able to do my duties.

Yes, you can, and should take pain killers with allopurinol.

Some doctors recommend every day for 2 to 6 months. Others recommend keeping them available to take at the first sign of a gout flare. All the combinations you mention are OK.

I found a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol (Tylenol) to be almost as effective as colchicine-ibuprofen combo. Your pharmacist should be able to advise other effective combinations.
